Shari Rusch
Stumbling Blocks to Stepping Stones

In first grade, professional evaluations concluded that Shari Rusch could not be educated beyond the fifth grade level. They were wrong! With determination and the help of teachers, peers, and family members Shari succeeded far beyond those early assessments. She is now a college graduate, a certified teacher, and has earned her masters degree in education. Shari also is the author of Stumbling Blocks to Stepping Stones, a talented vocalist and dynamic speaker. Through humor, music and a captivating presentation style, Shari brings her personal story of perseverance to life.

But Shari’s triumphant struggle with her education is just part of her fascinating story. Her parents divorced when she was in fourth grade, and her mother’s second marriage ended after less than two years. As a result, Shari was a latchkey child from a single parent household for most of her childhood. She has overcome the challenges of separation, divorce, blended families, economic challenges, and even the loss of a loved one who committed suicide.

Shari reaches into the hearts and lives of students, educators and parents with her warmth and compassion. She is a positive role model whose message of perseverance and hope inspires every audience.

"Shari spoke to approximately 950 administrators...She was a tremendous hit. A standing ovation is not a common occurrence with this "tough" audience, but Shari received two of them during her 60 minute presentation, something that has not previously occurred in 21 years of the IDEA Fellows Programs."
